kW Engineering has partnered with Intermountain Health since 2019, leading their Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx) efforts across nearly 15 million square feet spanning 30 hospitals and clinics throughout Utah and Idaho. The engagement centers on a purpose-built Remote Operations Center (ROC), giving a small team of specialists centralized visibility into performance across the entire healthcare portfolio.
At the core of the ROC is kW’s MBCx technology, which integrates building automation and enterprise systems — including Niagara, Metasys, Schneider, Siemens, utility interval data, ENERGY STAR, and CMMS platforms — into a single analytics environment. Across the buildings integrated to date, kW has mapped and normalized over 10,000 pieces of equipment and more than 100,000 building automation points.
Using fault detection diagnostics and ongoing engineering support, kW’s MBCx efforts identify, implement, and verify low-cost and no-cost operational improvements — targeting chilled water plants, air handling systems, pressure control sequences, and scheduling and control logic. At Riverton Hospital and Layton Hospital, kW resolved hardware and control issues that had long affected chilled water plant reliability, eliminating nuisance alarms and chiller trips. The team also reprogrammed building pressure control sequences to resolve long-standing pressurization issues — directly improving comfort for patients and staff.
To date, the program has verified cumulative savings of 12,802,785 kWh, 1,271,483 therms, and approximately 2,335 metric tons of avoided CO2 emissions. Beyond the energy and cost impact, the program has strengthened equipment reliability, reduced reactive maintenance, and built the analytics foundation for long-term portfolio-wide optimization.
